Chemnitz is a reflection of the might of German engineering. The people of Chemnitz appear to have a natural urge to invent something at least once in their lives. At the end of the 19th century, an average six times as many patents were filed from Chemnitz as from elsewhere in Germany.
The Karl Marx monument is the symbol of the city. The head is almost 24 feet high and weighs 40 tones. It is a point of contention, a giant work of art, a photo motif and historical witness all in one. The young locals simply call him Charlie.
