Torgau is the destination for thousands at the end of April each year, who come to celebrate "Elbe Day", with International Dixieland music, talk shows and political seminars - remembering the so important chapter of history written on 25th April, 1945. On this day the whole world looked to Torgau, where Russian and American troops shook hands on the ruins of the Elbe bridge and sealed peace even ahead of the final capitulation. But none on this day had the eyes and motivation to enjoy the beauty of Hartenfels Castle, the only castle from the early Renaissance to have survived in its full original state in Germany.
Martin Luther came to Torgau over 40 times. The people of Torgau freed Katharina von Bora and other nuns from a nearby convent - and at last she was able to become Luther's wife. "Even if all the leaves in the Torgau heath had voices, they could still not tell enough of the blessing of marriage and the disgrace of the monks against it." - Martin Luther.
