Strangely enough, Saxony's cities and towns owe a great deal of their beauty to their worst enemies.  Wars of conquest overland and water rights, campaigns of robbery against rich merchants - all this called for impenetrable fortifications, imposing castles, watch-towers and thick walled dungeons in which to imprison the villains and preserve the precious as well!

If one speaks of towns in Saxony, the first names that come to anyone's mind are Dresden and Leipzig.  But that is not all.  Impressive industrial architecture can be found in Chemnitz and Zwikau.  But here too there has been and still a top class cultural seen which is waiting to be discovered. Gorlitz, almost unlike any another town, unites the architectural styles of many epochs within its walls.  Every town in Saxony has its own special charm and creates impressions in its visitors that they have never forgotten.
